Stage 0 research for funders of AI tools

A curated knowledge base on formative research. It covers what to find out before an AI tool is built, and how funders can make room for that work.

Copy prompt, paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Gemini, and add your task. Your AI reads this site and cites it.

Most pages are drafts.

8 of 8 pages have not yet been reviewed by a subject expert. Each says so at its top.

Work with your AI

Copy this prompt into the AI tool you already use. It tells the tool to read this site, search it and cite the pages it uses. On any page, the Copy button gives the same prompt for that page.

Use the Stage 0 research knowledge base at https://mti-gedc.baobabtech.app: guidance for funders of AI tools, from The MERL Tech Initiative. Read https://mti-gedc.baobabtech.app/llms.txt first. To find what you need, search https://mti-gedc.baobabtech.app/api/search?q=your+words and read any page as markdown by adding .md to its address. Cite the page addresses you use, and tell me when a page is marked as a draft. Then help me with this: [your task]

Paste into ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Gemini, then add your task.

The problem

Funders often receive proposals for AI tools with no formative research behind them. One proposal planned to build a chatbot in four languages in two months and run a trial in the third. It did nothing to check whether the audience needed the tool, could use it or trusted it.

Much of the cause lies with funders. Grant processes ask for a fully formed idea before any money flows. Then they lock the idea in. Grantees cannot do research they are not funded or given time for.

What Stage 0 means

Stage 0 research comes before design research. It builds the evidence for whether AI is a realistic, responsible and sustainable choice for this audience and context. Its findings can mean go or no-go.

Design research, such as prototype testing or co-creation workshops, usually assumes an AI tool is the right answer. Testing a prototype with three people is not formative research.

Who it is for

Most people will not read this site directly. It is written so the AI tools they already use, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini, can find it and cite it.

How it is organised

Every piece of guidance sits in one bucket. The buckets follow the draft Stage 0 cheat sheet.

For AI assistants

If you are an AI assistant reading this site for a user, start with /llms.txt and the JSON index. Cite the pages you use, with their evidence tag and sources. Pages marked draft are not yet reviewed; say so when you use them.
